Move In/Out Cleaning
Home / Services / Move In/Out Cleaning
MJM Cleaning Services provides move-in and move-out cleaning for houses, condos, apartments, townhomes and rental properties in Wayzata and the surrounding Lake Minnetonka area. The service is built for the moment a property changes hands or changes occupants: you are returning keys, preparing for a closing, getting a unit ready for the next resident, or cleaning a new place before your belongings arrive.
Unlike a recurring visit, a move clean is planned around your property, its condition and your deadline, and MJM sets the cleaning scope with you before the appointment.

Two properties of the same size can need very different work. One may be empty, with the movers gone and the closets bare. Another may still have furniture in the living room and boxes stacked in the garage. MJM asks about the details that shape the work: whether the property will be empty, partly furnished or occupied, how large it is, what condition the kitchen and bathrooms are in, and when the cleaning has to be finished.
Those answers decide the scope, which is why MJM does not sell a single fixed package. MJM personalizes cleaning plans around the property, its condition and your priorities, and works from detailed cleaning checklists. Agreeing on the scope before the appointment is the simplest way to avoid surprises on the day.
Move-out cleaning usually happens after the movers have left and before the keys, closing or final walkthrough. That timing matters because the areas people overlook while packing, such as the insides of cabinets, closets, floor edges and the spots where furniture stood, are only easy to reach once things are gone. Common trouble spots include kitchen grease and food residue, bathroom buildup, baseboards, door frames, window sills and corners.
What you are handing over depends on your situation. A renter may have a lease or a landlord checklist to follow. A homeowner who is selling may be working toward a buyer walkthrough or a closing date. A landlord or property manager may need a consistent scope between tenants. Tell MJM which applies and mention any checklist in your quote request so your priorities are part of the plan. Whoever does the cleaning, take your own photos of the property afterward as a record of its condition.
A home can look clean at a showing and still have sticky shelves, grease behind the stove, pet hair in corners or dust left behind by maintenance work. Move-in cleaning is for the window between getting access and bringing your things in, when kitchens, bathrooms, closets and floors are easiest to reach. Cleaning cabinets before dishes go in, closets before clothes, and floors before furniture means each job only has to be done once.
If floors are cleaned, allow time for them to dry before furniture and boxes come through the door. Whether your move-in clean should include cabinet or appliance interiors is worth raising in your quote request, since those details change the scope.
MJM confirms the exact scope for each property in your quote. The list below shows the areas move cleaning commonly covers and the details worth raising, so you can state your priorities up front.
Move cleaning here typically centers on countertops, the sink and faucet, stovetop, backsplash, cabinet fronts, appliance exteriors and floors. The inside of the oven, refrigerator, freezer, microwave, cabinets and drawers are the details people ask about most, and they are covered in the next section.
Typical areas are toilets, sinks and vanities, mirrors, tubs and showers, fixtures and floors. Grout detail and the inside of vanity cabinets are worth mentioning if they matter for your handover.
Move cleaning here commonly includes dusting accessible surfaces, floors, baseboards, doors and window sills. Closet interiors, window tracks and blinds are detail items to raise in your request.
If these need attention, say so when you request a quote and MJM will tell you whether they fit your scope.
MJM selects cleaning products according to the surface and the cleaning task rather than using one product throughout the property. Products the team may use include Bona for appropriate flooring, Sprayway for glass and mirrors, Weiman for appropriate stainless-steel surfaces and professional degreasers for certain kitchen buildup, along with Miele HEPA vacuuming. MJM uses a combination of professional products and eco-friendly options where appropriate.
These are the details people search for most, and they cause the most confusion because they sit between a standard clean and a full move clean. Inside the oven means working on baked-on residue in the cavity and on the racks. Inside the refrigerator and freezer means wiping down shelves, drawers and walls once the food is gone. Inside cabinets and drawers means wiping out emptied shelves and corners. Each one adds time, and each depends on the appliance or cabinet being emptied beforehand.
MJM does not assume these are part of every move clean. List the ones you want in your quote request, and MJM will confirm whether they are in your scope and how they affect the price. If your landlord, buyer or property manager has named specific items, include those too.
Move cleaning is generally easiest and most complete once belongings have been removed. With the furniture gone, cleaners can reach floor edges, closets, cabinet interiors, baseboards and the corners that sit behind sofas and beds. With boxes and furniture still in place, those areas are blocked, and the work either slows down or has to leave those spots for another day.
If the property will not be fully empty on cleaning day, say so in your request, including what will remain and where. That lets MJM plan which areas can be reached and which cannot. For most people the best sequence is simple: pack, move out, then clean. If a closing or key deadline makes that hard, tell MJM the constraints and the plan can be built around them.
Regular house cleaning maintains a home people are living in. Deep cleaning addresses accumulated buildup and detail work in that same occupied home, such as heavy kitchen or bathroom grime. Move-in and move-out cleaning is designed around a property transition, usually with fewer belongings present, so cleaners can work on areas that are not normally reachable.
If you are staying put and the home needs a reset, Deep Cleaning in Wayzata is likely the better fit. If the property is changing hands or occupants, a move clean is. Deep carpet cleaning, such as hot-water extraction, is different from vacuuming, so mention it in your request and see MJM’s Carpet Cleaning in Wayzata page. If you are unsure which service fits, describe the situation in your quote request and MJM can help match it.
Move cleaning works best when it is coordinated with the rest of the move. Knowing when the movers finish, when keys are due and when furniture arrives lets MJM define the scope and timing before the appointment instead of on the day. The general sequences look like this.
Request your quote as soon as you know your dates, and include the day the movers finish and the day the keys or closing are due. MJM will review the timing against its schedule.
A little preparation makes a real difference to what can be done. Remove your belongings and trash, and empty the cabinets, drawers and closets you want cleaned inside. If refrigerator or oven interiors are part of your scope, empty the refrigerator ahead of time. If possible, keep water and power on through cleaning day.
Make sure the cleaners can get in, set aside valuables and anything you do not want handled, and tell MJM about priority areas and any landlord, buyer or property-manager checklist. Specific access arrangements are confirmed with you when you request your quote.
A cleaning appointment is not the same as repairs, removal or restoration, and some jobs need other specialists. Work that generally falls outside a standard move clean includes repairs, paint and nail-hole patching, mold remediation, biohazard or pest-contamination cleanup, hauling away large furniture or junk, and construction debris. Cleaning also cannot repair damage: scratches, worn finishes and some permanent stains may remain after cleaning.
MJM offers hoarder and extreme cleaning and post-construction cleaning as separate services. If your property falls into one of those categories, describe it in your request so it can be scoped properly, or see Post-Construction Cleaning. If you need items removed, that is a junk removal job, not a cleaning one.
If you are renting, a few steps help the handoff go smoothly. Review your lease, and ask your landlord or property manager what cleaning they expect. Minnesota law lets tenants request a move-out inspection, and the Minnesota Attorney General’s handbook says landlords must offer one within the five days before the tenancy ends, so you have a chance to address problems before anything is deducted. Document the property’s condition with dated photos or video. Schedule cleaning early enough that you can fix what you find before the final handoff.
Professional cleaning cannot guarantee the return of a security deposit. Deposit outcomes also depend on your lease terms, any rent owed, property damage, what counts as ordinary wear and tear, and your landlord’s assessment. Under Minnesota law, a landlord may withhold from a deposit only for unpaid rent, damage beyond ordinary wear and tear, or other money owed under the lease. You can read the full guidance in the Minnesota Attorney General’s Landlords and Tenants handbook. This is general information, not legal advice.
MJM does not price residential cleaning by the hour. Move cleaning cost depends on the property and the work involved: square footage, number of rooms and bathrooms, the property’s condition, the cleaning scope, whether oven, refrigerator or cabinet interiors are included, whether the property is empty, and any special requests.
MJM has a $150 minimum booking. Because every property is different, the most accurate way to know the price is to request a quote with your details.

Tania helped me out when my cleaning lady quit right before my daughter and her family came from London for a stay. She came right over, went over what I needed, I hired her and she was there the next day with the cleaning ladies. They were fabulous! The next time they cleaned Tania just sent the two women and they did a perfect job of getting my house spotless and just perfectly cleaned. I am so thankful for Tania, Susan and Maria and want everyone to know how wonderful they are for cleaning a house!Posted on Google![]()

FAQs
Have questions about move-in or move-out cleaning? Find quick answers about scope, timing, appliances and cabinets, deposits and pricing for homes in Wayzata and nearby areas.
MJM builds move cleaning around your property instead of a fixed package. The scope is set from the property, its condition and your priorities, then confirmed in your quote. Move cleaning commonly covers kitchens, bathrooms, floors, closets and surfaces, while details such as inside the oven, refrigerator and cabinets are confirmed individually so there are no surprises.
Deep cleaning targets buildup and detail work in a home people are still living in. Move-out cleaning is designed around a property transition, usually with fewer belongings present, so cleaners can reach areas that are normally blocked, such as cabinet interiors, closets and floor edges. If you are staying in the home, deep cleaning is usually the better fit.
Ideally, yes. Move cleaning is generally easiest and most complete once belongings have been removed, because furniture and boxes block floors, closets, baseboards and cabinets. If the property will not be fully empty, tell MJM what will remain and where when you request a quote so the scope can be planned around it.
These details are confirmed per job rather than assumed. List the ones you want in your quote request, and MJM will confirm whether they are in your scope and how they affect the price. Cabinets and the refrigerator should be emptied beforehand. Mention any items your landlord, buyer or property manager has specifically named.
Schedule it after the movers finish and before the keys, closing or final walkthrough, with enough margin to fix anything you notice. Request your quote as soon as your dates are set and include the day movers finish and the day the keys or closing are due, so timing can be reviewed against MJM’s schedule.
The price depends on square footage, rooms and bathrooms, property condition, cleaning scope, whether appliance and cabinet interiors are included, whether the property is empty, and special requests. MJM does not price residential cleaning by the hour and has a $150 minimum booking. Request a quote with your property details for an accurate price.
That depends on how access is arranged. MJM confirms access details with you before the appointment, including how the cleaners will get in. If you are a landlord, property manager, seller or buyer, mention who holds access when you request your quote so the arrangement can be settled in advance.
No. Cleaning can address the cleanliness of the property, but deposit outcomes also depend on your lease, any rent owed, property damage, what counts as ordinary wear and tear, and your landlord’s assessment. In Minnesota, tenants can request a move-out inspection, which gives a chance to address issues before the tenancy ends.
